What is Pediatric Ophthalmology?

This department takes care of the future of the nation – the children. Any ocular condition affecting the child since birth or acquired at an early age.

The most prevalent kind of blindness is amongst the children- the avoidable blindness. Avoidable blindness can be caused due to refractive error, night blindness, xerophthalmia etc. This department helps in curing and managing the vision of the eyes of a child.

Symptoms

  • Regular complains of headache or watery eyes
  • Blinking of eyes excessively
  • Rubbing of eyes vigorously after a period of time
  • Makes frequent mistakes while copying from the board
  • Suffers from nausea, dizziness or double vision
  • Squints excessively

Conditions occurring

Refractive Error

A defective vision that can be corrected by glasses.

Amblyopia or lazy eye

Poor vision in one eye or both eyes. Requires glasses along with other modalities like – occlusion.

Ocular allergy

One of the commonest complaints of itching and red eyes.

Congenital dacryosystitis

Constant watering in eyes from birth. Sometimes requires probing under General anesthestic.

Squint

This is characterized as the mal – alignment of eyes. Treatment to this is either glasses, exercises or if required surgery.

Congenital Cataract

It requires surgical correction as well as visual rehabilitation after surgery.

Drooping of eyelids or ptosis
